Encounters with songwriters in the castle church

Saturday, April 20th – 7:00 p.m. – Castle Church – choir concert “fides cantat”

In Wittenberg and many other places there were and are numerous events to mark the 500th anniversary of the Protestant hymn book. Singing together is an important expression of Protestant piety and spirituality. The hymnal anniversary is not only an opportunity to look back on the impact of songs in the Reformation period, but also to write and sing current songs in text and music. To mark this occasion, we are inviting you to three special events in the castle church this year, where you can meet, listen to and sing with songwriters.

The duo Friedhelm Kasparick and Andreas Mücksch from the Pauluskirche in Halle will kick things off. Both surnames should sound familiar in Wittenberg, and that is no coincidence. Friedhelm Kasparick is the brother of the former provost Siegfried Kasparick, Andreas Mücksch is the nephew of the long-time city church cantor Klaus-Dieter Mücksch. Church music director Andreas Mücksch is the composer of numerous musicals and many new songs from and for community practice and for church meetings. Stylistically, he moves effortlessly in the areas of pop, rock and jazz. Friedhelm Kasparick is a pastor and poet of new song lyrics. It is important to both of them to compose and write a suitable song for every Sunday of the church year that refers to the biblical readings of the respective Sunday. Twenty of these new so-called weekly songs are to be presented in Wittenberg on the eve of the Sunday cantata, on April 27th at 5 p.m., as part of an open singing. They are musically accompanied by the composer himself on the piano, band members from the castle church community and cantor Sarah Herzer on the organ.

On June 30th it will be international during an evening prayer at 5 p.m. On behalf of the Lutheran World Federation, jazz saxophonist Uwe Steinmetz worked with musicians from all over the world to develop the "Global Songbook" with new compositions. On June 30, visitors can join musicians from countries as diverse as Brazil, Namibia and Iceland. Immerse yourself completely in spiritual world music.
And last but not least, which also grew out of a fruitful collaboration between pastors and church musicians, on October 26th at 5 p.m. Eckart Reinmuth and Karl Scharnweber will present their "Workbook Worship Service", which contains 120 new songs and texts for congregational and worship practice.

Richly gifted with music and beautiful sounds - this is a quote from Friedhelm Kasparick in his weekly song for the Sunday cantata. The songwriters who present their new creations are richly gifted. Visitors will also be richly gifted with beautiful sounds on Saturday, April 27th at 5 p.m., in the Wittenberg Castle Church. Singing along is welcome! Entry is free, but a donation is requested at the exit.

Martin Luther's grave

When Luther died in Eisleben in 1546, Elector Johann Friedrich of Saxony (r. 1532-1547) ordered that the body be transported to Wittenberg and buried there in the castle church. The grave is about 2 m deep in the ground close to the pulpit. Since 1892 the site has been marked by a tumbe-like sandstone block.
