As a gift for the reopening of the church, the Queen of Denmark made a red altar hanging, which was presented to the public for the first time during the service. There have been good relations between the Danish royal family and Wittenberg since the Reformation. Denmark introduced the Reformation in 1536. Queen Margrethe is the head of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denmark. The monarch said the request to make the antependium for the palace church was a "very big and happy surprise" that she only accepted after some hesitation. "This task was a great challenge, which I dedicated myself to with great respect," she emphasized. The altar hanging has a large Luther rose in the middle.

Contemporary history

As part of the new construction of Wittenberg Castle (1489-1518), Elector Frederick the Wise of Saxony (r. 1486-1525) had a castle church built from 1496 onwards, which was consecrated in 1503 and completed around 1509. It took up almost the entire north wing of the main castle, which consisted of three wings, and its interior was furnished with works by the most important artists of that period of transition from the Gothic to the Renaissance.
